Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue is the most popular massage technique at Newton Chiropractic and Wellness Centre, most people find it to be greatly beneficial. Deep Tissue massage focuses on gently realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue, with focus on helping the body rid itself of its chronic patterns.  Deep Tissue is helpful for those with chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. Deep Tissue uses some of the same strokes as regular massage techniques but with emphasis on slower movements and deeper pressure with concentration on areas of tension and pain.

How does deep tissue massage work?

neck_massage_2_1.jpgWhen there is chronic muscle tension or an injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscle tension and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited motion, and inflammation. Deep tissue works by physically breaking down the adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this the Massage Therapist uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles.

Will deep tissue massage hurt?

At certain points during the massage most people find there is usually some discomfort and pain. It is important to tell your Massage Therapist when things hurt and if any soreness or pain you experience is outside your comfort zone. It is important that s/he knows how you are feeling during the massage and can adjust the pressure based on your individual needs. There is usually some stiffness and pain after a Deep Tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or two. The massage therapist may recommend applying ice or heat to a specific area after the massage to assist in recovery time. Depending on the individual massage you may also receive some stretching/movement exercises to help assist you in the recovery.

What conditions is deep tissue massage recommended for?

Unlike classic massage therapy, typically used for relaxation purposes, deep tissue massages usually focuses on a specific problem, such as:

  • chronic pain
  • limited mobility
  • recovery from injuries (falls, whiplash, sports injury..)
  • repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
  • postural problems
  • osteoarthritis pain
  • fibromyalgia
  • muscle tension or spasm
